Semiotics: Icon, Index, Symbols

Symbols

2) Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?

Icons and Indexes are important in media because they provide a clear basic understanding of what they represent. E.g Instagrams logo, you can't look at it and say that it represents Snapchat.

3) Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?

Global brands may want to avoid using different symbols since different cultures around the world have different beliefs, morals and ethics. Even though the brand may want to spread a good message, it may be perceived differently. E.g If you go to an extremely conservative and religious country and begin to show different symbols from different religions within an advertise, the locals or the extremely religious may get annoyed and interpret it differently

 4) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail?

This advertise by the cosmetic giant Nivea is a perfect example of a failing to understand that others perceive symbols in a different way. While Nivea had the correct intentions when creating this advertisement, it still created controversy due to the text "White is Purity". Some viewers had hegemonic responses towards the advertise and believed that this represented the white supremacist ideology that White people are above all others, and angered the public since it represented the anger that we face today.

5) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.

This advertise is very clear in what it is trying to represent. The advertise is clearly using symbols and icons to show that one of their burgers costs $2, there is not much left to interpretation when it comes to what is in the frame.
