feminist theory

1) What are the two texts the article focuses on?
The the texts within the article focuses on post feminism and the fact that two very playful texts re-visit old stereotypes. And asks how far they may have really moved on.

2) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?
In the Beyonce music video, beyonce is shown in a very sexual way, mainly shown through with tight clothes and makeup. This costume choice was done deliberately by Beyonce to help promote her point of trying to parody the 1960's stereotypical view of women and their role in society

Within Panam the main character was portrayed in a manner where it attracted male audiences.

3) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

The two texts portray a very similar image to the audience, they portray sexism in the past which in turn also represents sexism in the modern day, these two texts promote feminism by showing these two forms of sexism to a larger audience.

4) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.
Third wave feminism – Was a movement that redefined and encouraged women to be dominant and sexually assertive.
Nostalgia – A sentimental longing for the past, often only remembering the positives of the time.
Feminism – A movement aimed at defining, establishing, and defending women’s rights and equality to men.

1) How might this video contribute to Butler’s idea that gender roles are a ‘performance’?

2) Does this video reinforce or challenge the view that women should perform certain roles in society?
The music video challenges and parodies the stereotypical view of women and what roles they play in society. It does this by showing both a typical women and a dominant women in the same video.

3) Would McRobbie view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women? Why?
Since McRobbie analyses magazines towards females, is a cultural theorist and is also a feminist, I would believe that McRobbie views Beyonce as a role model for women as her music videos shows females as powerful and significant members of society.

4) What are your OWN views on this debate – does Beyonce empower women or reinforce the traditional ‘male gaze’ (Mulvey)?
I believe that Beyonce empowers women in a very different way done so in the past, she promotes feminism through the method of male gaze. Beyonce uses her sexuality, her looks and body to promote the idea of being able to what do she wants with her body which shows the female audience that you are open to do what you want with your body no matter what men say.
