MIGRAIN: Representation theory - David Gauntlett & collective identity

1) What is collective identity? Write your own definition in as close to 50 words as possible.
A collective identity is an identity that belongs to a group rather than individuals; a collective identity generally requires at least one similarity between the individuals within the group e.g. A very well known collective identity is the typical American Identity which involves a very patriotic feeling towards America and a very strong belief in freedom.

2) Complete the task on the factsheet (page 1) - write a list of as many things as you can that represent Britain. What do they have in common? Have you represented the whole of Britain or just one aspect/viewpoint?

  • Digestives
  • Union Jack
  • The Royal Family
  • Tea
  • London
  • Harry Potter
  • James Bond
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • X-Factor and other Competition shows (Britains got talent etc)
This list all have a very literal or immediate connection to Britain and represents the British quite well. There are more historical and cultural connections Britain, but I don't believe that it represents the British today.

3) How do James May's Top Toys offer a nostalgic representation of Britain?
James May's Top Toys offers a nostalgic representation of Britain by creating content that revolved around the presenter's old nostalgic toys, toys that were very popular around the age he was growing up, creating a sense of nostalgia for any British viewers over the age of 30

4) How has new technology changed collective identity?
New technology has made spreading a collective identity far easier than before due to the increased national and international connectivity that is possible with social media. Before the introduction of new media, most collective identities had to almost only be national, that is no longer the case as now anyone can belong to any collective identity

5) What phrase does David Gauntlett (2008) use to describe this new focus on identity?

Identity is complicated; everyone thinks they have got one.’ Is one of Gauntlett's phrases that help clarify the idea that although everyone believes they have a separate and unique identity, in reality, an identity is far more complicated than what one thinks, and that chances are, we don't have a unique identity.

6) What does Gauntlett suggest about creativity and identity?
He believes that the ability to effectively use creativity determines a persons ability to formulate a unique identity

7) How does the Shaun of the Dead Facebook group provide an example of Henry Jenkins' theory of interpretive communities online?

The Shaun of the deads facebook group shows Henry Jenkins theory of interpretive communities with the members of said facebook group by creating groups for certain aspects of the movie, e.g. the fact that Shaun of the Dead has a group about the fact that the movie taught people the word exacerbate
