Magazines: Men's Health CSP analysis

1) Write a one-paragraph summary of your notes for each key concept from the booklet:

Media Language (e.g. conventions, narrative, genre etc.):
The magazine uses typical conventions associated with magazines e.g. large bold cover lines designed to catch the attention of readers and a headmast to show the reader which magazine they're reading and a main model in the center of the cover. Often aggressive wording is used to help attract a more masculine audience. They use multiple narratives to help promote their main ideology that physical and mental health is important, no matter the age, e.g. one example of this narrative would be the marathon man on the third page.

Media Industries (e.g. Hearst Communications)

Due to hearst communications being a large conglomerate with print, distribution and broadcasting, Hearst communications have far more opportunities and control over Men's Health and how it is distributed than their rivals such as esquire and GQ.

Media Audiences (e.g. demographics, psychographics, pleasures)

The main age demographic would be between the age of 23-35 in the AB or ABCI category due to two main reasons, one being the content of the magazine as Men's Health contains some content that would not be relatable to age groups above and below the mentioned age group e.g. Finances would not be relatable with younger audiences, while technology would be quite alienating to older audiences. The price of the magazine is also quite expensive at £4.10, this may be difficult to afford for a younger reader.

Media Representations (e.g. masculinity)

2) Identify three specific aspects/conventions (e.g. cover line, colour scheme, text, image etc.) from each page of the CSP that you could refer to in a future exam. Explain why that particular aspect of the CSP is important - think about connotations, representations, audience pleasures, reception theory etc.

Editor's Letter and contents page
Contains rhetorical questions that get's the audiences to questioning themselves and exploits insecurities.

Feature: True Grit - 'The Marathon Man'
