Textual Analysis

1) What type of text is it?
The text is a print from the cover page of Empire Magazine. It can also be viewed online.

2) How do you know? What are the key conventions that allowed you to identify the text?
You can tell that this from the cover page of a magazine due to a few things. First, the magazine's slogan is in a large pink font displayed evidently in the middle of the cover. Second, The figures on the cover page are from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy 2, this shows that main focus/article will be about the movie. Typically a newspaper would not dedicate a whole cover page to a feature film, however, an entertainment magazine could do so. Third, the figures are gazing at the reader, this creates a welcoming feeling between the reader and the people, this is a key convention of magazines.

3) In your opinion, who is the target audience for this media text?
I believe that the cover is targeted towards 16-35 year-olds who are fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

4) How would this audience access the text? E.g. where/when would they consume it? Using what device?
While most younger audiences would access the magazine online through their pc or through their smartphones at home, as it is the most conventional and easiest way to view it. But an older audience may prefer to have a hard copy of the magazine and would buy it at their local convenience shop or bookshop (e.g. WHSmith)

5) What values, ideologies and beliefs in society are reinforced or challenged in this media text?
In the text above there are 7 figures, four being males, 3 being females, this un-equal quantity of males to females ratio shows two ideologies, first being that we still live in a more male-dominated society, but it also shows the rise of the acknowledgment that whilst females may be physically weak to males from a biological standpoint, they are still as important and as powerful as males. The introduction of more female superheroes encourages young girls to do what they want to do and not to stay put and accept the roles and career paths that society has set out for them, this challenges the beliefs given to girls at a young age and encourages them to seek out what they want to do. This also teaches boys that females can be equally as powerful as males, promoting gender equality
