Learner Response.

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Strong sense of critical anatomy - some good ideas
EBI: Really misses the mark- no reference to one of the CSP's (Maybeline) and not enough on the other one either
2) Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?

On a scale of 1-10 I believe I hit around a 7-8
4) Look at your answer and the mark scheme for Question 1. What aspect of technical film language (camerawork, mise-en-scene etc.) or advertising persuasive techniques do you need to revise to improve your response to this kind of question in future?

I had missed a few points for question one e.g. the black-tie being a phallic object is something I did not pick up on, another point would be the stereotypical ideas of beauty.
5) Look at your answer and the mark scheme for Question 2. What aspects of the cultural and historical context for the Score hair cream advert do you need to revise or develop in future?

I had forgotten to mention the text within the score advertisement actively reflects the insecurity of people of the time period the advertisement was made in. Other than this I believe that I focused far more on what was within the picture and what that meant rather than how the CSP's represent the different figures.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on David Gauntlett and masculinity 'in crisis'. Write a completely new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples/textual analysis from the Advertising CSPs.

A common belief in today's society is that Masculinity is in crisis, I personally believe that traditional masculinity is in crisis and a brand new form of masculinity is beginning to take its place, and as David Gauntlett has stated, that may not be a bad thing.

"previously masculinity was presented in one of two ways, either a James Bond style masculinity that attracted 'the ladies' or a buffon style masculinity was firmly under the wifely thumb, thankfully, and somewhat belatedly, things are beginning to change" This is a statement by Joeseph Gelfer when talking about the gradual change of masculinity, the quote accurately presents the idea that masculinity is shifting and is not in crisis; while many support the idea that masculinity is not in crisis but is shifting there are those who believe that this shift threatens them, confusing them of their place in society. The main method to how this shift of masculinity is through social media; With the increase of use of social media and the growth of global communication, men have easier access to different interpretations of masculinity or even reject masculinity entirely (stage 4/5 from the stages of masculinity developed by Joeseph Gelfer). The growth of digital media has allowed men who represent different forms of masculinity to present themselves to a larger audience and allow them to influence other men trying to find their identity.

On the other hand the idea of traditional masculinity can be said to be in crisis due to the position and nature of men in society is changing. As the pay gap between men and women are beginning to decrease and is becoming more equal, the idea that men are supposed to be the sole provider in the family unit is slowly beginning to change and many men with traditional values are uncomfortable with that idea. Jobs in general now are becoming more automated e.g. many "male" jobs which include manual labor are beginning to become more automated, this leaves jobs that require "soft" skills such as emotional intelligence, communication; traits have been previously accustomed to female jobs. While mass media is beginning to become more liberal, representing more diverse ideologies and beliefs, traditional ideologies are still being openly presented to the public from advertisements to mainstream media texts such as T.V and film e.g. The armani CSP contains meanings that support traditional masculine ideologies, some of these ideologies include, the man being the centre of attention, women being objectified for their looks etc.

Overall, I believe that while the traditonal idea of masculinity is in crisis due to the shifting nature of ideologies and of gender, this shift is not a bad thing and helps provide men who belong to a different identity express themselves.
