Magazines: Oh Comely - Close-textual analysis

1) What do the typefaces used on the front cover suggest to an audience?

The typefaces are both cursive and also in lowercase, this signifies that the magazine is not your typical magazine as it goes against the typical stereotypes of Magazine covers 

2) The words under the title introduce the content and topics addressed. What do these suggest about the potential audience of Oh Comely?
"stories/film/music/fashion/ideas", these things are often associated with thought and creativity, that may suggest to the audience that the magazine is creative, this shows that the potential audience of Oh Comely are creative and or alternative
3) How do the cover lines use narrative to create enigma? What do the cover lines suggest about the magazine's content and audience?

The cover line uses alliteration to attract an audience, along with that the cover line uses enigma codes to make the audience curious as to what the cover line means. Due to this, the cover lines suggest that the audience are educated and or curious individuals
4) Write an analysis of the central image.

Medium shot of the main figure; the model does not follow the typical conventions of modern beauty, very little/no skin showing, may not support typical male gaze. The layout of the cover lines and headmast gives off a minimalist aesthetic

to an extent there is a level of gender ambiguity, it is neither hyper-masculine or hyperfeminine.  

Feature: Speaking Out

1) What does the headline and standfirst suggest about Oh Comely's feminist perspective?

The headline and standfirst suggest that Oh Comely's feminist perspective is actively feminist as it promotes female empowerment and promotes women having their voices heard.

2) What do the interviewees in this feature suggest about the values and ideologies that underpin this magazine?

The interviewees suggested that Oh Comely promotes and encourages positive change about issues in society, this includes body positivity, preventions of FGM etc.

3) How conventional is the page design in this feature? Why?

The page design completely subevrts the typical conventions of a magazine page layout; the pages within Oh Comely actively create empty space use a smaller font to further elevate the feeling of minimalism 


4) Pick out specific aspects of this feature that subvert the stereotypical representation of women in the media. Are they different to what we may find in conventional women's lifestyle magazines such as Glamour or Cosmopolitan? Why is the absence of men a key feature of Oh Comely?

There is not an extreme amount of skin showing, something that is common in many mainstream magazines, along with this the models are not posing in a flirtatious way.

5) How does the photography offer a fresh or unusual perspective on women?

While most photography of women in magazines it can be seen that the models are clearly posing, in Oh Comely the models look to be more candid.
Feature: More than gender

1) How does this feature offer a fresh perspective on gender and identity?

The feature presents modern views on gender and gender identity, 
2) What is the significance of the writer and photographer? How does this fit with the Oh Comelybrand?

The photographer offers more a narrative and meaning along with the writing the writer provides for the article.3) What style of photography is used in this feature?

The photographer uses candid and landscape shots to help tell a story, along with this the photographer uses images from a photo booth to help add a family/loving/nostalgic feeling to the article.
4) What representations of the trans lifestyle can be found in this feature?

The article represents trans life as both a mental and physical journey and how difficult it can be for the transgender person and their loved ones.


5) Why is the biographical information at the end of the article significant? (Clue: the writer is also an editor of a niche, creative magazine called Entitle).

The biographical information does two things, one, create more of a connection between the reader and the article, and second it makes the page look even more minimalist, this is important as minimalism is the aesthetic for the magazine.
